i have an eight week male kitten that came to live with me and it had a flea or two…what is the best way to rid my kitten, me and our home of these unwanted pests?

Answer:
Poor baby!

Honestly, if the vet states he is old enough, I would have him dipped. When I brought home my last pair of kittens, the poor things were positively infested and that was the only thing that would work. After that, get drops for him like Revolution or Front Line, then either board him or close him in the lavatory while you take care of the rest of the house. I say loo because that room is usually flea-free.

Wash your bedding and curtains, and liberally sprinkle your carpet and furniture with Borax. Let it sit a minimum of 20 minutes, then vacuum it up. Keep vacuuming each day for at least 2 weeks so you'll get the new fleas and flea eggs. You should be good afterwards.

Good luck!

When my wee kitten was covered with fleas and having skin problems from the bites, I called my vet. He said to bathe the kitten with Ivory dish soap and let it stay on for 5 minutes. Yup! it worked. Ivory is milder than other dish soaps.

I use a flea comb, like the comb for nits, it is very useful, as well. I haven't used it on a cat, but use I it on my dogs. If you’re working with a heavy infestation, get a container with hot soapy water. When you get the fleas on the comb rinse the comb in the hot soapy water. Otherwise, if you just put them in the trash they'll be back.

I crush the flea against the comb or with my finger nails if I'm only dealing with one or two fleas. They must not survive to come back again.

I'm afraid that the advice given by the other person about spraying and washing washable items is necessary to the elimination of your problem. There is no easy way around it.

When you vacuum, be sure to take the bag out and change it. The buggers can get out of the vacuum cleaner and re infest. Yea! for bag less cleaners. They have to be dumped after each use.

Hi benny,

It can be dangerous to use powders etc: on kittens under 6 weeks old. I know your little bundle is 8 weeks but since he’s only just out of the danger zone i thought this website might be helpful to you.

Answer:
I'd contact a vet. Just call in with your question. They can advise you on what to do.

Answer:
Get a treatment at the store. Most stores should have flea a tick “get rid ofs”.
