I have heard conflicting information about starting solids. I was told by a health nurse that postponing solids (ie. waiting 12 months for cows milk, egg whites etc) does NOT prevent food allergies it is simply delaying the reaction from the allergy?
But I have read online that it is actually preventing the allergy from occuring?
For example, they say to wait from 9-12 months to introduce cows milk - if this is actually helping to prevent an allergy from developing I would wait the 12 months, but if it isn't then I may start a little sooner at 10 or 11 months?
What have you all heard?
Answer:
hmmm.
I know my 18 month old was not cared for properly before I got him (recieved sole custody of infant of 8 weeks), and his bio-mom was giving him peaches, banannas, and other fruits.
He did develop allergies to fruits when he began eating them again at the proper age. (6 mos. or so).
He also was given milk as a newborn, and when I began milk, he was allergic immediatly..(about 8 mos or so, started introducing milk in cereals).
I then held off of those foods and very gradually reintroduced them, and now at 18 mos. he is fine with milk and fruits.
so, with that experience, I do think that introducing a food too early, can cause a reaction, however, they will mostly grow out of them.
I think introudcing milk at 8 mos or so when mixing cereal is fine. In fact, I think most foods with the exception of spinach is fine for most developing babies (about 7 mos. and older…..taken slowly).
Foods introduced WAY too early (as in my son's situation), I think will cause a reaction, but most should grow out of them if when they are older, the offending foods are offered gradually.
