I’ve small moles all over my body some tiny and some a bit bigger.None of them were dodgy or anything.

When we’ve the few days of sun in the uk I was caught in the sun for about 10 mins. I got burned quite badly believe it or not,on the back of my shoulders.

So since then about 3 weeks ago my back has been itching quite bad. Today I believe that I have either scratched off a small mole or a spot on there. It is no longer itching but underneath whatever I scratched off is now 3 little black dots. The thing that I scratched off was grey/black in colour.

I dont want to see my doc for nothing, should I just keep an eye on it. if it was cancerous or something would there be other signs?

I’m seeing a doc next week for something unrelated and I will mention it but until then?

I was going to try to picture it but its so small, barely visable.

As a nurse who has worked in plastic and reconstructive surgery, including with patients with melanomas i would say it is never a waste of time to ask your GP to check a mole you are worried about.

However, I think in your case next week will be soon enough. From your description it sounds unlikely that what you scratched off was a cancerous mole but it is best to be sure.

Melanomas are usually bigger than what you describe, usually at least half a cm across. they are usually a mix of brown and black and will have a jagged and irregular outline. There might be a ring of inflammation around them and they can sometimes feel raised when you run your finger over them. They have the ability to also be itchy.

However because there are diffferent types I can’t say for sure that yours is not one and I havent seen it but hopefully this gives you an idea of what to check for. I too have loads of moles and have done similar to them on occaision but they’ve never caused a problem. I am paranoid tho because of where i used to work and keep a good mental eye on all of them. i have had 1 or 2 checked by my GP when ive been worried and he didnt mind at all. I think your itchiness is probably from your sunburn and peeling rather than your mole.

Definitely get your GP to look at it when you go next week, to put your mind at rest and continue to keep an eye on it. If it grows (even after the Dr has looked at it) or anything else worries you then go back. When I have scratched mine they usually just scab and then settle down to being how they were before. It is possible to have a full mole check done including a survey with a special light to spot any changes. Your GP might be able to tell you where to get this done in your area or you can go privately. Often your local hospital will run a 'lumps, bumps and moles' clinic where you can go to be checked or for advice. Hope everything is ok for you. Take care and use high factor protection in the sun at least 30 or 40. its worth it for peace of mind.
