how should i go about asking my dr. to test me for diabetes…i dont want him to think i am like crazy or anything….there is a family history of diabetes (my dad, grandma, and uncle) what should i ask?

Answer:
Telling your doctor about you family history really ought to be enough for ANY GOOD DOCTOR to take you seriously. Have the Ha1c test done or a easy fasting finger prick done in the morning before you eat. Make sure that testing for diabetes is something that you’re tested for periodically. As I'm sure you know, left undiagnosed for a period of time will cause damage to your body. Worry less about what your physician thinks and go with your gut feelings on the matter. Remember that having family with diabetes makes you as knowledgeable about the matter as a lot of physicians. They might know how the inside of the body works, but you know from experience how it affects lives and what a person has to do to take care of themselves. Don't take no for an answer and don't be made to feel like a massive ol' worry wart!! :)

Answer:
It is no massive deal. Your fasting blood glucose is tested during any normal blood test. The specialized test is call a Hba1C or a1c for short. With your family history no one would would think you are weird. If your doc does he/she should not be a doc.

Most big drug store chains will test your a1c level for about $25. They’ve to draw blood for it. They’ll also explain what the numbers mean but do it with your doc so if needed you can begin proper treatment like diet & lifestyle changes and perhaps medication.

Answer:
He should be aware of the family history of diabetes, since I hope you told him already; it certainly wouldn't hurt to remind him and ask what kind of symptoms to look out for, or to test your blood sugar to see if you might be affected too.

Answer:
do uhave signs??

Frequent trips to the water closet

Unquenchable Thirst

Losing Weight Without Trying

Weakness and Fatigue

Tingling or Numbness in Your Hands, Legs or Feet

there r others but i cant think of them….

if u do tell him u were wondering bcause u r having Symptoms

and it runs in the FAM

Answer:
if he knows about your family history of diabetes then he should be concerned about it too and you should be getting checked for it periodically anyway so just ask him to do periodic checks on you so that you can identify the problem early

Answer:
Actually, your physician will probably be glad you brought it up. A fasting finger prick ma help him evluate, or he may want you to take a glucose tolerance test, given over several hours. I'd opt for the GTT because it is more diagnostic.

Answer:
Don't hesitate to ask, and if he/she makes you feel weird or in any way uncomfortable, find a new doctor! You should be able to freely discuss this issue with any good physician.

Answer:
just ask your doctor to run a blood test for you and tell him way

Answer:
Just let him know that you have a family history of it. Let him know if you are having problems. Like ferguent urination, weight gain or loss. Tell him you want to do an A1C test. This will give you an average of your sugar for a 3mth period. If you are like me I check my sugar often and try to let him know what’s going on when I see him. If its high then we do a A1C test but it comes back on the line…Im so close to being diabetic its not even funny. He might just wait and get you to monitor your levels for a few weeks yourself. You can go to www.onetouchgold.com and get a free test meter. but you’ll have to say that you are diabetic on the survery to get it.
