My friend recently had parathyroid surgery and now it

has been over a month, she still does not have her

normal voice back. Does anyone have any recommendations

as to what she has the ability to do? Will her voice come back?

Answer:
Your voice should be back to normal by 6 - 8 weeks post surgery. Sshe needs to go back to the ENT physician if it lasts longer. They have the ability to improve it slightly without surgery.

Answer:
Parathyroidectomy is a safe and effective procedure. There are few specific complications of parathyroid surgery. These may include damage to nerves supplying the vocal cords and inadequate function of the remaining parathyroid glands after surgery. .The nerve that controls much of the voicebox

(larynx) runs adjacent to the thyroid gland. The nerve may not work well after surgery.

This will lead to a hoarse, breathy voice and sometimes trouble swallowing. Most mild

hoarseness after surgery is due to swelling of the vocal cords from the breathing tube

(endotracheal tube) placed by the anesthe siologist during the procedure. If both lobes are

removed, rarely both the left and right recurrent laryngeal nerves might not work, and the

patient might have trouble breathing. This might require a breathing tube to be placed
