What’s the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?
What causes gestational diabetes and does it go away after one gives birth? (is it considered Type 1 or 2?)
Answer:
Gestational diabetes can be caused by the hormones produced during pregnancy increasing the woman's resistance to insulin. Its more like Type 2 Diabetes and can be controlled by diet or, depending on severity, insulin medication.
It generally goes away after the baby is born but it can make the woman more susceptible to recurrence if a second pregnancy comes within a year of the first. Women who have had GDM are also at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes as well as the baby peing prone to childhood obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.
Type 1 normally occurs before the age of 20 after the pancreas (which produces insulin) is destroyed by autoantibodies and can no longer create insulin. This is controlled by regular insulin injections half an hour before breakfast and dinner.
Type 2 diabetes normally occurs after the gae of 35 and occurs when the insulin produced by the pancreas doesn't work very well due to insulin resistance. It can normally be controlled by diet and excercise though in time they usually need insulin medication as well.
Either type can occur throughout a persons lifetime though Type 2 is hereditary but can be prevented if caught early on.
Answer:
Type 1 is when you produce little or no insulin naturally and its controlled with insulin injections..Type 2 is when your body still produces some insulin but maybe not quite enough and its controlled by drugs n diet..As im a man my understanding of diabetes in pregnancy is limited but if i remember correctly it can go away after giving birth..but not always..and as far as i know its nearly always type 2…If you need to know more the Diabetes UK website is a good reference point..
