I had blood work done last week because my A1C in January was 5.7, (blood sugar was good at 83). I had it done because of frequent urination… I don't wake up during the night though… no thirst or hunger or any other major symptoms though…
I just got blood done last week and the physician told my mother yesterday that my A1C was 6.1 and I’ve type 2 diabetes apparently? He wants to see my parents and me today to discuss what's going on…
6.1 A1C although blood glucose is fine automatically = Diabetes?
Omg, I can't believe this. Idk what to do… I had made a few changes to my diet since my last test and I thought I'd be fine but I guess I'm not.
I'm an athletic 6'1, 180 lbs. 16 year old kid. I just completed an entire basketball season (from November to the end of February) with no problems. My grandfather had diabetes though. He died of a heart attack when he was 50-something. Does that make it probable that I have diabetes now, too even though I don't have any other symptoms… high A1C… good blood sugar?
Is my doc 100% right?
Answer:
You need to have more tests run, per the American Diabetes Association the HbA1c test is not used to diagnose diabetes but is used to monitor how well you are controlled. However there has to be a reason for the higher than normal A1c, your doctor should order a OGTT or oral glucose tolerance test. This test takes about 3 hours to complete but will show if you’ve insulin resistance and will show what your glucose levels are after consuming a high carb meal.
Type 2 diabetes biggest risk factor is family history, without the hereditary factor about the only other way to get it is a side affect of some drugs.
Answer:
My personal view, is a yes/no. You might have type 2 yes, but in most cases type 2 CAN be cured/taken care of without anything major. Im speaking about diets, look up a variety of diets, I would personally recommend a vegan diet, don’t be afraid to ask your physician about this or challenge his opinions.
Answer:
your blood glucose level is at the borderline of normal.. you might have got it through your genes.. and since you're just 16, and athletic, the manifestations might not have expressed themselves yet…
Answer:
I would seek out a 2nd thought…….
Your first A1c was perfectly normal along with your blood sugar reading of 83mg/dl. I don't know why you were retested unless your doctor comes a different school of thought.
As has been said an A1c is not a diagnostic test for diabetes.
If that 2nd A1c of 6.2 was performed first then it would have been proper to do two follow up fasting blood sugars, the definitive test for diabetes. The 2nd test is always done to eliminate the possibility of a lab error.
So the answer to your question of “Is my physician 100% right”, my answer would be no at least not without follow up tests.
You need to insist on a 2nd thought.
Answer:
Your A1C isn't that high, even though it is borderline, but at this level I wouldn't expect a diagnosis of diabetes! It is doubtful that you have type 2 diabetes, as you’re young, fit and not overweight. If frequent urination is your only symptom, this also means it is unlikely. Did you eat 12 hours before your A1C test? This can affect the results.
Type 2 diabetes isn't normally hereditary, but type 1 is.
I would question your doctor, and get regular tests done (get a home blood monitoring machine, and check your levels before and 1 hour after eating for a few days). He is probably just being on the safe side, but unless you sugar levels rocket, it is unlikely that you have diabetes. Try to keep to a healthy diet though, and cut out excess sugars!
