I’m 22 and black. Most of the men and women on my mother and father's side suffer from diabetes, hypertension and/or heart disease, and those that don't are on the verge of contracting these killers that plague the african american community, more than any other community in this country.

Well since I know this and I am also at high risk because all three run in my family, and I gain weight in my midsection easily, I want to do something about it.
My boyfriend and I live together and he too has a family history of these diseases.

Well I want us to start eating healthier and I was wondering, If I cooked from diabetic cook books and prepared low sodium meals, along with exercise will this help?…Will this be enough?…Will we lose weight?
(also I’m hoping by learning how to prepare good food, in a healthy manor, maybe I can help some of my family members out)

And please don't refer me to a doctor, because l, like many other Americans I also don't have a tap of insurance!

Answer:
Firstly I think its brilliant that you’re taking control of your health like this. Well done.

Yes unfortunately sometimes diabetes and heart disease can run in families, but the fact that it does can give you the benefit of heinsight.

Eat a diet high in fibre, low in saturated fat and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. You should also reduce the amount of sugar (refined sugars) that you eat. Keeping a check on salt and saturated fats will help to reduce your risks of heart disease. It is proven that people who exercise as tiny as half an hour 3 times a week can reduce their risks of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and strokes. Also stop smoking if you do.

Cooking from diabetic cook books is also a great idea. These meals tend to be low sugar, low fat foods, which are just what you're looking for.

Remember, for some reason people get sick. No matter what they do. All you can do is greatly REDUCE the risk factors which can lead to disease. And at the very least, if in later years you develop diabetes you’ll have a good knowledge of the foods you should be eating.

The best of luck! x

Answer:
Your awareness is fantastic! You state you don't have any insurance but you’re wrong! You’re providing your own with you attitude and plans for your life style. You already have one excellent answer and I think you can see which one it is.Let me add that for me, one thing has helped more than any other in my efforts to control my weight - portion control! Much smaller portions than the average American eats nowadays and I “push away” from the table and quit eating when I know my body has taken in enough. Best of luck to you both although it really sounds like you’re making your own “luck”!
