Inorder for the kidneys to become infected, the bacteria has to travel up from the bladder, so the things that lead to bladder infections can also lead to kidney infections if the bladder infection is not properly cleared up, or ignored.

Diabetes, prostate enlargement (males only of course), undetected UTI- as already mentioned, poor genital hygeine, alcoholism, kidney stones, hypertension/& heart failure, congential or acquired damage to the urethra.

Certain foods and activities such as smoking may have a link to kidney problems, though I am not sure of current information.
