Is it even possible for death to occur by mixing alcohol with over-the-counter sleeping pills? I've heard a number of views on this subject. A colleague of mine is rumored to have tried to commit suicide by taking an entire bottle of these pills with alcohol.

Take too much of ANY pills can be fatal. If you took all the pills at once, it would kill you on its own… don't see why you'd need the alcohol to make it more fatal than that.

That's how most OD suicides occur: sleeping pills and alcohol.
Just look at marilyn monroe (not gonna go into any conspiracy theories), she overdosed on all her pills and champagne.
Be careful and never consume alcohol while you're on certain medications!
