The most common form of epilepsy is caused by slightly abnormal brain development at birth. Consequently, epilepsy most commonly shows up during early childhood. It also often diminishes or disappears entirely as one passes puberty because the brain can repair itself as it continues to develop through childhood.
Less commonly, epilepsy develops in adulthood due to some type of change in the brain from an injury, tumors, neural lesions, or vascular problems in the brain, with head injuries being the most common cause in adults.
