Sudden small lump on hand joint.. what could this be?

A small lump about 1/4 of inch in diameter suddenly appeared near the joint of my pinky and my hand. I noticed some sort of anguish and sore/pain when i was driving this day but found the actual bump just now. What could this be? It's a hard lump and sore to touch. It shifts around a bit if I move it. I discovered this just now. It wasn't there this morning.
