hey.. so basically i have a huge lump in my neck. i have looked at diagrams of the throat on google images and from what i make out it looks to be my thyroid gland =/
Is it possible for the thyroid gland to swell? And does an under-active thyroid cause this kind of thing?
Please let me know if anyone has the same thing or knows what it could be… thanks!

Answer:
I currently have a lump in my throat, which is an enlarged thyroid.

If it is thyroid, then look in the mirror and it will be on the left or right of your adams apple and move up and down as you swallow. It isn’t thyroid if in the middle. If this is the case, then read on:

Thyroid lumps are usually cysts, which are nothing to worry about. We all get cysts and they are usually left alone unless they are unsightly or causing an obtruction, in which case they can be drained. They are just fluid filled sacks.

However, they can be other things. In 5% of cases they are cancerous, so you must get checked out swiftly. Thyroid cancer is 95% curable if caught early.

Under active and overactive thyroids can cause lumps to form as can iodine deficiency or excess.

Your physician will probably send off blood samples to check your thyroid function and send you for ultrasound. Utlrasound will be able to tell if it's a cyst, in which case your physician will treat you.
If there is any uncertainty at all, and you will be referred to an endocrinologist at a local hospital, who will send you for fine needle aspiration (FNA), where a needle is inserted and some cells removed for analysis. The vast majority are benign.
Then they treat you according to whatever they have found. For me, much internet gazing and worrying has ended up just “wait and see what happens” and mine is benign and appears to be very gradually reducing on its own without medication.

There are so many variables here that you'll go nuts sitting at home weighing up each possibility. Just pop down to your physician to get tested.

If you want to talk further about this, send me an email anytime.
Or the British Thyroid Foundation
http://www.btf-thyroid.org/
have a local groups page with lots of phone numbers (on the left hand menu click on “for patients” and then “local groups” and “BTF local groups”, who have given me advice since I found my lump.
All the best, Debbie
