An adult's resting heart rate of 196 is very perilous. When the heart beats rapidly, the heart pumps less efficiently and provides less blood flow to the rest of the body, the increased heart rate also leads to increased work and oxygen demand for the heart. This might lead to heart attack.
You can determine your heart rate at this website.

Answer:
Quite simply the system isn't designed to sustain a rate of 196. Several things happen with such high rates (normal is between 60 and 100). Firstly, the amount of time required to fill the ventricles is reduced therefore the amount the heart can pump out is reduced, this leads to a lowering of the blood pressure. Secondly, as the heart receives its own blood supply when the heart is at rest the lower blood pressure reduces the perfusion pressure of the heart so the ability to supply oxygenated blood to the heart is reduced. Thirdly, the metabolic demands of the heart (the amount of oxygen and nutrients required) is increased. In short the heart needs more Oxygen than can be supplied.
If you’re younger and in good health you can accommodate this sort of rate for longer, if you’re older and have existing heart disease then this is quite dangerous.
You need to have an ECG and blood tests to discover the underlying cause, so, see your doctor………

Hi Patrick,
Where did you take your pulse? Did you use your thumb?
I’m just trying to determine that your calculation is correct.
The pulse should be taken at the wrist, and with your fingers, never your thumb. You should count for a whole minute.
If this is what you did and your rate really is that high, you should get medical attention. That’s far from normal. Please take my advice and get it checked out.

Answer:
Normal relaxing heart rate should be around 85. You should see a doctor. I had a heart rate of 250 once. There was an extra nerve in my heart, it can be corrected and I only had to rest two days after it was done.
