I have a 16mth old who when she starts to cry cannot catch her breath (she can't breathe in) its like her body gets stuck in exhaling to the extent that her body freezes and she faints. I tried blowing in her face to give her a reaction to beathe in, but it doesn't work. I have called her physician gotten her checked and they believe that it is just a temper tantrum. I noticed that it happens mostly when she’s tired. But the experience is terrfiying. A friend told me to try splashin water in her face, Im yet to try this as I get so afraid when it happens, I feel so helpless… and ideas or views…

My Mom in Law once told me that when my husband was tiny, he would get so angry that he would hold his breath until he passed out. After loosing consciousness his breathing reflex kicked in, he started to breath again normally and quickly awakened. I'm sorry to state that she passed away a few years ago, so I am unable to ask how she handled this problem. I know how scary it must be for you and thought it might help to know that another mother had also had this experience.
I do think your friend's suggestion just might work. A small amount of very cold water splashed in her face just as she begins to hold her breath might shock her enough that she would take a breath. It might only take a time or two for her to cease doing it.
Answer:
It is so scary, I know. But remember, you’re the mother.
She will breathe in. She has to. Perhaps you did what I did when I was a kid? The I will hold my breath till I die business?
She will breathe in. But each time you panic you make her behaviour valid. Try to stay calm (God, I know it is hard) and let her sort it out. It is general in overly tired kids who don't want to be put down. As long as you are worried, you won't leave her and she wins.
So try and calm your fears and step out of her line of view (but still so you can reassure yourself she is ok) and wait.
