When I was 15 a Doctor told me I had a mild case of asthma. He gave me an inhaler and sent me on my way. A few months later I went back for something not related to asthma and the Doctor asked if I smoked. I stated yes and he said well I am taking you off the inhaler until you stop smoking. I never went back and never got another inhaler. I am 28 now and am just wondering if a mild case of asthma can go this long without getting worse. I do get out of breath sometimes doing small things and huge things. It really depends. I’ve a cold now and noticed yesterday that when I would take a breath in it was tight and kinda like brathing through a straw. That lasted for about 20 minutes. I go see my new Physician soon but I’m wondering if a mild case of asthma gets worse without treatment. It's been 13 years since and never had a severe attack or anything like that. Also my Grandpa (mom's dad) died of lung cancer and my Dad has emphazema and yet still smokes. How likely is it that my asthma got worse?

Answer:
Unreal, the physician took you off medication because you smoke? that's a bad thing for him to do, did he want you to die to prove his point?

I was a smoker with asthma, got up every morning and made it to the kitchen before my first asthma attack, used my inhaler and sat and waited for it to get better so I could have a cigarette. I know that sounds awful, but you only notice your asthma when it is playing up.

Now, asthma can get progressively worse as your lungs age and don't work as well. You also have a family history of cancer so you may be predisposed to contracting lung cancer. Some people smoke their whole lives and never get cancer, but some don't, with a known history, you'd be silly to carry on smoking. Emphysema is one of those things that they now accept that you usually get as you get older anyway, but smoking SURE won't help it.

I would make two recommendations, number one, go to the doctor and get a new inhaler, you don't want to find out how bad your asthma is as you're turning blue waiting for the ambulance, and number two - for goodness sake give up smoking. Your lungs are struggling already, why make it any harder for them? poor old things :)

Answer:
Beatlemania has it right. Get another inhaler. You're going to need it. And stop smoking. I smoke so I comprehend but you really need to make the effort.
The doctor that took your inhaler away probably regrets doing that. It must bother his conscience. Hopefully anyway.

Sorry but that sound you hear, like you're breathing through a straw, is a classic sign of asthma. When my asthma flares up, I make a wheezing sound and have to use my inhaler; at it's worst, I not only use the inhaler but also a nebulizer (special machine for breathing treatments).

Yes, asthma can get worse if not treated. You're lucky you haven't had a really bad attack of asthma. My friend Jane's 29 year old nephew DIED of asthma! He’d an asthma attack and didn't take it seriously enough. He couldn't breathe and they rushed him tothe hospital but didn't get there fast enough and he died.

Hopefully you stopped smoking now. I was a smoker, too, until I was diagnosed with asthma. Then the physician made me stop. Please be careful that you don't let it get worse, quit smoking and start carrying an inhaler for emergencies.
