I have no trouble breathing during the day or in the mornings. Yet every night I have trouble breathing, it feels like I have asthma, but the fact that its only at night confuses me. It really sucks cause if I lay down or anything it gets worse so getting to sleep is a chore, and sometimes its so bad I cant even get to sleep. If I ever cough anything up I spit it out, so I dunno how it could be something in my lungs. I used to take a steroidal nasal spray…forgot the name, but it seemed to make the issue all day instead of just at night, so I stopped. Anyone know what this is?
Answer:
you could have one of two things;
nasal drip as well as severe allergies will make you cough and sniffle at night and keep you from resting properly…I recommend buying a Neti pot, to help irrigate your nasal passages and remove some of the gunk that might be trapped up there….. http://www.boston.com/news/globe/health_…
I also recommend taking some kind of allergy medication (I use Zyrtec-D) to help you out with the allergies, I have also used a humidifier in my room and added eucalyptus oil, to help open my bronchi's at night…the last thing I heard was great to keep in your room was salt lamp http://www.saltlampforless.com …they are ionizers and promote relaxation and healing. They will give relief from hay fever, sinus problems, allergies, asthma attacks and increase alertness. you might also want to use a couple of pillows to prop yourself up during sleep and try not too eat too close to bedtime as eating right before bed will not help your breathing…
try the allergy approach first, if this fails and your problem continues, go to see a sleep specialist as you might be suffering from sleep apnea, only a sleep study can determine that…http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/sle…
Best of luck to you, I hope you feel better soon…

so what everyone has said bar the last person, who seems to high off their own stuff, seems to be right. osbtructive sleep apnoea is a condition where for about ten seconds, when your asleep, you stop breathing, and you awake although most people dont realise they have awoken. this means you will think you have had a good nights sleep and still wake up tired as ever. there are two reasons it can occur. when you go to sleep your pharyngeal muscles, the ones of your throat, dilate and can cause an obstruction. in overweight people, the fat that has deposited around these muscles causes further obstruction. secondly, when you lie your head back, your tongue has a tendancy to fall back into your throat and cause an obstruction. there is also a nasal cause i.e. if you have polyps. best thing to do is to talk to your doctor. he will be able work out what kind of 'snorer' you are and then you can work out some treatment, which can be in form of a nasal strip or something called C-PAP which stands for continous positive airways pressure. it involves wearing a mask and looking a little bit like hanibal lectur but hey, if it gives you a good nights sleep then who cares!
Answer:
It could be an allergy to dust mites, they like to live in pillows and can cause you to have trouble breathing at night. Feather pillows can worsen it.
Try getting hypoallergenic pillows, or if you have pillows you don't want to get rid of at least try dust mite proof pillow cases. Sometimes something this simple will take care of the problem.
Good luck
