Asthma's been out of whack the past 2 weeks. Completed Z-pack and Medrol pack the other day and have been taking Albuterol in nebulizer 3 x's a day while continuing my daily meds (Symbicort, Nasonex, Zyrtec & Aciphex).
I had a really bad attack the other day where not only my upper chest was tight and constricted, causing wheezing, but my sides near my belly button started squeezing like crazy (like a charlie horse) with the pain shooting up my back. It's 5 days later and I'm still very sore. The SOB comes and goes and I’m constantly feeling like there are weights sitting on my chest.
Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this before? How long does it take to fully recover?
Answer:
If you've suffered a severe asthma attack it's quite possible you've injured a muscle but for shooting pains this could even be a broken rib - yes it's possible to break a rib with a bad attack, had that happen to me.
If the soreness is slowly easing then it's just a matter of time before it'll recover but if it's not you really need to see a doctor. This could be a sign of pleurisy which is the inflamation of the cavity surrounding the lung and will need other treatment.
The Nasonex usually takes a week or two to work and then it must be taken on a daily basis.
Answer:
I have had asthma for 30 years and yes it can be painful after a serious attack. Sounds like you pulled a muscle to me. If it doesn't improve next week yes you should have a visit with the doctor. I’ve had to have CPR many times and those made me seriously sore.
